How to pick a YouTube giveaway winner fairly (and prove it)

Viewers are quick to suspect a rigged giveaway. A fair draw is easy when you decide the rules first, freeze the entries, and let anyone check the result.

1. Write the rules before you announce

YouTube’s contest policies say the organiser is solely responsible for the contest. Among other things, they require:

Also check the prize promotion rules where you and your viewers live. In the UK, for example, section 8 of the CAP Code covers promotions with prizes. This guide is not legal advice.

2. Keep the entry condition visible in the comment

“Comment your favourite bread” or “include #giveaway” can be checked by anyone. Conditions like “must be subscribed” or “must like the video” cannot be checked reliably, and YouTube’s developer policies do not allow API tools to reward people for liking or subscribing. Keep it to the comment.

3. Set a closing time and stick to it

Announce the exact closing time with a time zone, for example “Friday 25 September, 23:59 UTC”. When you draw, enter the same time as the deadline so late comments are ignored. A deadline in the past also keeps the entry list stable, which makes the draw easy to verify later.

4. One entry per person

Decide whether multiple comments count. Most giveaways count each account once. The comment picker keeps each person’s earliest comment when “One entry per person” is ticked, and it can exclude your own channel’s comments.

5. Commit to a seed in advance

A random draw is only convincing if you could not have re-rolled it until you liked the result. Announce a seed before the deadline, for example in the video, a pinned comment or a community post. After the deadline, enter that seed in the picker. Because the draw is deterministic, the seed and the frozen entry list fully decide the winners.

6. Publish the proof link

After the draw, copy the proof link and post it with the winner’s name. It contains the seed, your filters, a SHA-256 fingerprint of the eligible entries and the winning comment IDs. Anyone who opens it re-runs the draw and sees whether the entries and winners still match. Read exactly how the draw works.

7. Contact the winner safely

Reply to the winning comment and ask the winner to contact you through an address listed on your channel’s About page. Never ask for payment to “release” a prize. Scammers often impersonate creators in replies, so tell your audience how you will and will not contact them.
